INTIMACY starts with feeling open and honest to issues at hand.  Once you feel safe enough to express yourself honestly, the two of you will be able to get to the heart of the problem.   By discovering the long-term issues, you can then focus on solutions without feeling resentful about the past and start a new beginning together!
